Also known as Asafi Imambada was built by fourth Nawab of Oudh, Nawab Asaf-ul-Daula in 1784 is the most famous and attractive monument in City of Nawabs. Bara Imambara has a enormous construction. The main hall of the Imambara is 50mts long and 15mts high, without having any pillar to support its ceiling. A veranda runs along the inside of the hall which is built in such a way that even the smallest murmur anywhere in it can be heard across the antechamber.
Bara Imambara commonly known as called Bhool Bhullaiyya, a network with confusing passages. The guides to find their way out of this maze deliberately leave tourists. The place is said to have been used for the recreation of the royalty. A marvelous mosque is positioned in the compound.

Chota Imambara It also known as Husainabad Imambara built in 1837, and said to be the brainchild of Mohammed Ali Shah, Third Nawab of Avadh. Chhota Imambara is known as the palace of lights because of the decorative lighting during many festivals.The compound contain many tombs, said to be those of Mohammad Ali Shah and his relatives. A golden dome, which when illuminated during festivities, offers a fantastic view, tops the main building of this Imambara.
The structure has a gilded white dome and the walls are adorns with Arabic calligraphy. Several turrets and minarets also accentuate the mughal style of architecture giving it a unique façade. The chhota Imambara also has a structure located outside which is called Satkhanda (seven parts) which was being built as a watchtower; however the construction was abandoned after only four storey’s due to the death of Ali Shah making it one of the unique attractions in the city.
The Hussainabad Clock Tower 221 ft tower built near the Husainabad Imambara and is the marvelous example of British architecture. Actually, this tower was built by Nawab Haider to mark the arrival of the First lieutenant Governor of Avadh, Sir George Couper. This is one of the tallest clock towers in India and is located near the Hussainabad tank, it is locally known as Ghantagar Talab. |
